Transition FAQsOverview
What is ISO 9001:2026?
ISO 9001:2026 sets out the requirements for a quality management system. Published in September 2026, it replaces ISO 9001:2015 and keeps the same core approach. It asks an organisation to understand its context and interested parties, plan its processes around risks and opportunities, and show that it consistently provides products and services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. It is the most widely used management system standard and applies to organisations of any size or sector, from sole manufacturers to national service providers.
Hexa Certifications Limited carries out independent third-party certification audits against ISO 9001. We assess whether your quality management system meets the standard and is working in practice, then issue a certificate where it does. Under the impartiality rules of ISO/IEC 17021-1 we do not write management systems or provide consultancy, so the system you present must be your own. An optional pre-assessment is available if you would like an independent view of readiness before Stage 1.
Certification follows a three-year cycle. Stage 1 reviews your documented information and readiness, and Stage 2 assesses implementation across your scope. Surveillance audits then take place at least once a year, followed by a recertification audit before the certificate expires. If you hold an ISO 9001:2015 certificate, it remains valid during the transition period, which is expected to last about three years. Hexa can audit organisations moving from the 2015 edition, normally through a transition audit at a planned surveillance or recertification visit. Climate change, first added by the 2024 amendment, remains a consideration under clauses 4.1 and 4.2.

Benefits
What ISO 9001 certification does for you
Meet tender and supplier requirements
Many public sector buyers and larger private customers ask for ISO 9001 certification in supplier questionnaires. An independent certificate gives them evidence that your quality system has been assessed by a third party.
Consistent processes
The standard encourages you to define how key processes work, who is responsible and how they are measured. Auditors check that this happens in practice, which supports more consistent delivery across teams and sites.
Fewer errors and complaints
Requirements for nonconformity control, corrective action and customer feedback help you find the cause of problems and stop them recurring, rather than dealing with the same issue repeatedly.
Risk-based planning
Clause 6.1 asks you to consider risks and opportunities when planning your system. This gives leadership a structured way to anticipate issues that could affect products, services or customer satisfaction.
Better management information
Monitoring, internal audit and management review give leaders regular, factual information about performance. Decisions on resources and improvement can then be based on evidence rather than assumption.
A foundation for other standards
ISO 9001 uses the Harmonized Structure shared with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 27001 and others. Organisations often build on it and move to integrated audits covering several standards.
Requirements
What the auditor will assess
The main clauses of ISO 9001:2026 and what each one asks of your organisation.
Clause 4
Context of the organisation
Determine internal and external issues, including whether climate change is relevant, the needs of interested parties, the scope of the system and the processes needed, with their interactions.
Clause 5
Leadership
Top management must take accountability for the system, set a quality policy, keep a focus on customers and make sure roles, responsibilities and authorities are assigned and understood.
Clause 6
Planning
Determine and address risks and opportunities, set measurable quality objectives with plans to achieve them, and plan any changes to the system in a controlled way.
Clause 7
Support
Provide resources, competent people, suitable infrastructure and environment, calibrated or verified measuring resources, awareness, communication and controlled documented information.
Clause 8
Operation
Plan and control operations, determine requirements for products and services, control design where relevant, manage external providers, control production and service provision, release and nonconforming outputs.
Clause 9
Performance evaluation
Monitor and measure performance, including customer satisfaction, analyse data, carry out a planned internal audit programme and hold management reviews with defined inputs and outputs.
Clause 10
Improvement
React to nonconformities, find and address root causes through corrective action, and continually improve the suitability, adequacy and effectiveness of the quality management system.
Audit evidence
What we will ask to see
Auditors sample records and talk to people doing the work. Having these ready makes Stage 2 smoother and faster.
- Defined scope, including justification for any requirement determined not applicable
- Quality policy and measurable quality objectives with progress records
- Risk and opportunity assessment linked to the processes in scope
- Competence and training records for people whose work affects quality
- Supplier approval, monitoring and re-evaluation records
- Customer feedback, complaint records and satisfaction monitoring
- Internal audit programme, completed audit reports and follow-up actions
- Management review minutes and corrective action records

Process
Your route to ISO 9001 certification
- 1
Application and quotation
You tell us your scope, sites, headcount and standards. We calculate audit duration using the accreditation rules and send a fixed quotation for the full three-year cycle.
- 2
Stage 1 audit
Your auditor reviews your documented information, scope, legal and regulatory awareness, internal audit and management review, and confirms you are ready for Stage 2.
- 3
Stage 2 audit
An on-site evaluation of how your management system works in practice. The auditor interviews people, observes activities and samples records against every requirement.
- 4
Certification decision
Any nonconformities are closed with evidence. A qualified reviewer who did not take part in the audit makes the certification decision and your certificate is issued.
- 5
Surveillance and recertification
Surveillance audits take place at least once a year to confirm continued conformity. A recertification audit before the third anniversary renews your certificate.

FAQs
ISO 9001 certification questions
Answers about scope, timing and audits for ISO 9001:2026.
Can Hexa help us write our ISO 9001 quality manual or procedures?
No. As a certification body we must remain impartial under ISO/IEC 17021-1, which means we cannot design, write or implement your management system and then certify it. You can build the system yourselves or use an independent consultant with no link to us. We can offer an optional pre-assessment, which gives a factual view of readiness without providing solutions.
What has changed in ISO 9001:2026?
ISO 9001:2026 is an evolution of the 2015 edition rather than a rewrite. The process approach, Plan-Do-Check-Act and risk-based thinking remain. Published summaries highlight more emphasis on quality culture and ethical behaviour, separate requirements for risks and for opportunities, stronger planning of changes to the system, climate change within clauses 4.1 and 4.2, and expanded guidance in Annex A. We recommend a gap analysis against the published text.
Can we exclude clauses from our ISO 9001 certification?
Clause 4.3 allows you to determine that a requirement is not applicable only where it does not affect your ability to ensure conformity of products and services or enhance customer satisfaction. The most common example is clause 8.3 on design and development where you make products to customer designs. You must state and justify any such determination in your scope.
How long does ISO 9001 certification take?
This depends mainly on how established your system is. You need to have run the system for long enough to produce records, including at least one internal audit and management review. Once ready, most organisations complete Stage 1 and Stage 2 within six to twelve weeks of booking. The certification decision follows a review of the Stage 2 audit report.
What happens after the certificate is issued?
The certificate is valid for three years. Surveillance audits take place at least once each calendar year, with the first due within twelve months of the certification decision. These audits sample parts of your system each time. Before the certificate expires, a recertification audit reviews the whole system so that a new three-year certificate can be issued.
We hold ISO 9001:2015. When do we need to transition?
Your 2015 certificate remains valid during the transition period, which is expected to last about three years from publication, with an indicative deadline around September 2029. The formal rules are set by IAF and Global Accreditation Cooperation (Global ACI). Hexa can carry out your transition audit alongside a planned surveillance or recertification visit, usually with some additional audit time. Certificates not transitioned by the deadline will no longer be valid.
Can you certify several sites under one ISO 9001 certificate?
Yes, where the sites operate under one management system with central control, internal audit and management review. Depending on the activities, some sites may be sampled rather than all visited at every audit. We will ask for details of each site, its activities and headcount when preparing your proposal so that audit time is set correctly.
Can ISO 9001 be audited alongside other standards?
Yes. Because ISO 9001 shares the Harmonized Structure with standards such as ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, many organisations run an integrated management system. We can carry out combined audits that cover the common clauses once and the standard-specific requirements separately, which usually reduces disruption compared with separate audits.
