Overview
What is ISO/IEC 27001:2022?
ISO/IEC 27001:2022 specifies requirements for an information security management system (ISMS). It requires an organisation to assess information security risks to the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information, select controls to treat them and manage those controls through a continual cycle of monitoring and review. Annex A lists 93 reference controls in four themes: organisational, people, physical and technological. Each organisation compares its chosen controls against Annex A and records the outcome in a Statement of Applicability.
Hexa Certifications Limited performs independent third-party certification audits against ISO/IEC 27001. Our auditors review your risk assessment, risk treatment and Statement of Applicability, then test that controls are implemented and effective. Because ISO/IEC 17021-1 requires impartiality, we do not write policies, carry out risk assessments or implement controls for clients. An optional pre-assessment is available if you would like an independent view of readiness before Stage 1.
In the UK, ISO 27001 is regularly requested by public sector buyers, financial services firms, healthcare bodies and large technology customers as evidence of supplier security. The transition period from the 2013 edition ended on 31 October 2025, so certificates now refer to the 2022 edition. The 2024 climate change amendment also applies, requiring you to consider in clause 4.1 whether climate change is a relevant issue for your ISMS.
Who it is for
Organisations that choose ISO 27001
- Software, SaaS and cloud service providers
- Managed IT, hosting and data centre businesses
- Suppliers handling personal or sensitive data for public sector bodies
- Financial services, payments and fintech firms
- Healthcare technology and digital health providers
- Professional services firms such as legal, accountancy and consultancy practices
Benefits
What ISO 27001 certification does for you
Answer security questionnaires
Customers often send lengthy supplier security questionnaires. A current ISO 27001 certificate and Statement of Applicability can answer many questions and shorten due diligence, though some buyers will still ask for specific details.
Risk-based security
Controls are selected according to assessed risks rather than a fixed checklist. This helps you focus resources on the threats and vulnerabilities that are most relevant to your information and operations.
Supports data protection duties
UK GDPR requires appropriate technical and organisational measures for personal data. An ISMS provides a structured way to identify, implement and review such measures, although certification is not a data protection compliance certificate.
Management oversight
The standard requires top management involvement, defined objectives, internal audit and management review. Security becomes a governed business process rather than solely an IT responsibility.
Supplier and cloud control
Annex A includes controls on supplier relationships and the use of cloud services, helping you manage the security of third parties that process or host your information.
Better incident response
Controls covering incident planning, response, learning and evidence collection help you detect, contain and learn from security events, reducing the impact when something goes wrong.
Requirements
What the auditor will assess
The main clauses of ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and what each one asks of your organisation.
Clause 4
Context and scope
Determine internal and external issues, interested parties and their requirements, interfaces and dependencies, and define the scope and boundaries of the ISMS.
Clause 5
Leadership
Top management must demonstrate leadership and commitment, establish an information security policy and assign responsibilities and authorities for information security roles.
Clause 6.1.2
Risk assessment
Define and apply a repeatable information security risk assessment process that identifies risks, assigns risk owners and analyses and evaluates risks against defined criteria.
Clause 6.1.3
Risk treatment and SoA
Select treatment options and necessary controls, compare them with Annex A, produce a Statement of Applicability with justifications, and obtain risk owner approval of the treatment plan.
Clause 7
Support
Provide resources, ensure competence and awareness, determine communication needs and create and control documented information required by the ISMS.
Clause 8
Operation
Plan and control processes, including externally provided ones, perform risk assessments at planned intervals or when significant changes occur, and implement the risk treatment plan.
Clause 9
Performance evaluation
Monitor and measure information security performance and ISMS effectiveness, carry out a planned internal audit programme and hold management reviews.
Clause 10
Improvement
Continually improve the ISMS, react to nonconformities and take corrective action to eliminate their causes.
Audit evidence
What we will ask to see
Auditors sample records and talk to people doing the work. Having these ready makes Stage 2 smoother and faster.
- ISMS scope statement including boundaries, interfaces and dependencies
- Information security risk assessment methodology and results
- Risk treatment plan approved by risk owners
- Statement of Applicability covering all 93 Annex A controls with justifications
- Asset inventory, access control records and user access reviews
- Supplier security assessments and agreements
- Security incident logs, vulnerability management and backup test records
- Internal audit reports, management review minutes and security objectives

Process
Your route to ISO 27001 certification
- 1
Application and quotation
You tell us your scope, sites, headcount and standards. We calculate audit duration using the accreditation rules and send a fixed quotation for the full three-year cycle.
- 2
Stage 1 audit
Your auditor reviews your documented information, scope, legal and regulatory awareness, internal audit and management review, and confirms you are ready for Stage 2.
- 3
Stage 2 audit
An on-site evaluation of how your management system works in practice. The auditor interviews people, observes activities and samples records against every requirement.
- 4
Certification decision
Any nonconformities are closed with evidence. A qualified reviewer who did not take part in the audit makes the certification decision and your certificate is issued.
- 5
Surveillance and recertification
Surveillance audits take place at least once a year to confirm continued conformity. A recertification audit before the third anniversary renews your certificate.

FAQs
ISO 27001 certification questions
Answers about scope, timing and audits for ISO/IEC 27001:2022.
What is the Statement of Applicability?
The Statement of Applicability is a required document under clause 6.1.3. It lists the controls you have determined are necessary, states whether each of the 93 Annex A controls is included or excluded with a justification, and shows whether the included controls are implemented. Auditors use it as a central reference when sampling and testing controls.
How are the 93 Annex A controls organised?
In the 2022 edition the controls are grouped into four themes: 37 organisational controls, 8 people controls, 14 physical controls and 34 technological controls. Eleven controls were new compared with 2013, including threat intelligence, information security for use of cloud services, data masking, data leakage prevention and secure coding. ISO/IEC 27002:2022 gives guidance on each control.
Is our ISO 27001:2013 certificate still valid?
No. The transition period agreed by the International Accreditation Forum ended on 31 October 2025, after which certificates issued against ISO/IEC 27001:2013 were no longer valid. Organisations that did not complete the transition need a certification audit against the 2022 edition. If you are in this position, contact us to discuss your current system.
Can we exclude Annex A controls?
Yes, where your risk assessment and context show a control is not needed. For example, a fully remote organisation without offices may justify excluding some physical controls, though controls for remote working and equipment will still apply. Each exclusion must be justified in the Statement of Applicability. You cannot, however, exclude any requirement from clauses 4 to 10.
Is ISO 27001 the same as Cyber Essentials?
No. Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed scheme covering a defined set of basic technical controls, and is required for certain central government contracts. ISO 27001 is a broader, risk-based management system covering governance, people, physical and technological security. Many organisations hold both, and the two can complement each other well.
Does ISO 27001 certification mean we comply with UK GDPR?
Not by itself. An ISMS can provide much of the security of processing that UK GDPR requires, but data protection law also covers lawful basis, transparency, data subject rights and accountability, which are outside the scope of ISO 27001. Some organisations extend their ISMS with ISO/IEC 27701 for privacy information management.
How long does ISO 27001 certification take?
You need to have completed your risk assessment, Statement of Applicability, an internal audit and a management review, with controls operating long enough to generate records. Most organisations at that point complete Stage 1 and Stage 2 within six to twelve weeks of booking. Larger or more complex scopes require longer audits.
Can the audit be carried out remotely?
Parts of an ISO 27001 audit can be performed remotely where the ISMS is largely cloud-based and evidence can be reviewed securely. Physical locations within scope, such as offices or data rooms, may still need an on-site visit. We decide the approach during planning, taking into account your scope and the reliability of the remote technology.
