Transition FAQsOverview
What is ISO 14001:2026?
ISO 14001:2026, published in April 2026 to replace the 2015 edition, specifies the requirements for an environmental management system. It helps an organisation identify the environmental aspects of its activities, products and services, understand its compliance obligations, and manage significant impacts through planning, operational control and evaluation. The standard takes a life cycle perspective, so organisations consider stages they can control or influence, such as purchasing, transport, use and end-of-life treatment, as well as their own sites.
Hexa Certifications Limited provides independent third-party certification audits against ISO 14001. Our auditors assess whether your system meets the standard and is effective in practice, including how you evaluate compliance with environmental law. Because ISO/IEC 17021-1 requires impartiality, we do not provide consultancy or prepare aspects registers, procedures or legal registers for clients. An optional pre-assessment is available if you want an independent check of readiness before the formal audit.
In the UK, ISO 14001 is frequently requested in construction, facilities, manufacturing and public sector supply chains. It can also support wider commitments, such as preparing a Carbon Reduction Plan for central government contracts, although certification does not replace that document. The 2026 edition asks organisations to consider a wider range of environmental conditions, such as biodiversity and resource availability alongside climate change. Existing ISO 14001:2015 certificates remain valid during the transition period, and Hexa can audit organisations moving from the 2015 edition at a surveillance or recertification visit.
Who it is for
Organisations that choose ISO 14001
- Construction, civil engineering and infrastructure contractors
- Manufacturers with emissions, waste, chemicals or resource use to control
- Waste management, recycling and environmental services businesses
- Facilities management and property services providers
- Transport and logistics operators with fleet and fuel impacts
- Suppliers to public sector bodies with environmental procurement criteria
Benefits
What ISO 14001 certification does for you
Supply chain and tender credibility
Many buyers ask suppliers to show how environmental impacts are managed. Independent ISO 14001 certification gives evidence that a third party has assessed your system against an international standard.
Structured legal compliance
The standard requires you to identify compliance obligations and evaluate whether you meet them. This gives management a regular, documented view of permits, waste duties and other environmental legal requirements.
Control of significant impacts
Aspects and impacts assessment directs effort towards the activities that matter most, such as emissions, discharges, waste or resource use, rather than spreading attention evenly across everything.
Resource and waste efficiency
Objectives and monitoring often highlight waste, energy and material use that can be reduced. Savings depend on your operations, but the system provides a way to track and act on them.
Emergency preparedness
Clause 8.2 requires planned responses to potential environmental emergencies such as spills or fires. Testing these arrangements helps reduce the consequences if an incident does occur.
Support for climate commitments
An environmental management system provides a framework for setting objectives, collecting data and reviewing progress, which can support net zero targets and carbon reporting alongside other tools.
Requirements
What the auditor will assess
The main clauses of ISO 14001:2026 and what each one asks of your organisation.
Clause 4
Context of the organisation
Determine issues affecting the system, including environmental conditions and whether climate change is relevant, the needs of interested parties, compliance obligations and a defined scope.
Clause 5
Leadership
Top management must demonstrate commitment, set an environmental policy that includes commitments to protect the environment, fulfil compliance obligations and continually improve, and assign responsibilities.
Clause 6.1
Aspects, obligations and risks
Identify environmental aspects and their impacts using a life cycle perspective, determine significant aspects, identify compliance obligations and address related risks and opportunities.
Clause 6.2
Environmental objectives
Set measurable environmental objectives consistent with the policy, with plans that state what will be done, the resources, who is responsible, timescales and how results will be evaluated.
Clause 7
Support
Provide resources, ensure competence and awareness, establish internal and external communication processes and control the documented information needed by the system.
Clause 8
Operation
Control processes linked to significant aspects, including externally provided processes, products and services, consider life cycle stages in design and purchasing, and prepare for and respond to potential emergencies.
Clause 9
Performance evaluation
Monitor and measure environmental performance, evaluate fulfilment of compliance obligations, carry out internal audits and hold management reviews.
Clause 10
Improvement
Address nonconformities, take corrective action to remove causes and continually improve the environmental management system to enhance environmental performance.
Audit evidence
What we will ask to see
Auditors sample records and talk to people doing the work. Having these ready makes Stage 2 smoother and faster.
- Aspects and impacts register with the criteria used to determine significance
- Register of compliance obligations, including permits, consents and waste duties
- Records of compliance evaluation and any actions arising
- Environmental objectives, targets and monitoring data such as energy, waste and emissions
- Waste transfer notes, duty of care records and contractor controls
- Emergency response plans and records of drills or tests
- Internal audit reports and management review records
- Records of environmental incidents, complaints and corrective actions

Process
Your route to ISO 14001 certification
- 1
Application and quotation
You tell us your scope, sites, headcount and standards. We calculate audit duration using the accreditation rules and send a fixed quotation for the full three-year cycle.
- 2
Stage 1 audit
Your auditor reviews your documented information, scope, legal and regulatory awareness, internal audit and management review, and confirms you are ready for Stage 2.
- 3
Stage 2 audit
An on-site evaluation of how your management system works in practice. The auditor interviews people, observes activities and samples records against every requirement.
- 4
Certification decision
Any nonconformities are closed with evidence. A qualified reviewer who did not take part in the audit makes the certification decision and your certificate is issued.
- 5
Surveillance and recertification
Surveillance audits take place at least once a year to confirm continued conformity. A recertification audit before the third anniversary renews your certificate.

FAQs
ISO 14001 certification questions
Answers about scope, timing and audits for ISO 14001:2026.
Does ISO 14001 certification prove we comply with environmental law?
Not on its own. Certification shows that your system includes a commitment to fulfil compliance obligations and a process to evaluate compliance, and auditors check that this process works. It is not a legal compliance inspection and does not replace the role of the Environment Agency or other regulators. Significant unresolved legal breaches would, however, affect a certification decision.
What is a life cycle perspective and do we need a life cycle assessment?
A life cycle perspective means considering environmental aspects at stages you can control or influence, such as raw material sourcing, design, transport, use and disposal. ISO 14001 does not require a detailed life cycle assessment. Auditors expect to see that you have thought about these stages and applied controls where relevant, for example in purchasing or product design.
Does ISO 14001 help with Carbon Reduction Plans for government contracts?
It can support them but is not a substitute. Central government procurement can require suppliers to publish a Carbon Reduction Plan with a net zero commitment and emissions reporting. An ISO 14001 system provides a structure for collecting data, setting objectives and reviewing progress, but the Carbon Reduction Plan remains a separate document with its own content requirements.
What has changed in ISO 14001:2026?
The changes are generally described as moderate and aimed at clarifying existing requirements. Published guidance highlights a broader view of environmental conditions, including biodiversity and resource availability alongside climate change, restructured requirements on risks and opportunities, a new requirement for planning changes, stronger emphasis on the life cycle perspective, control of externally provided processes, products and services, and expanded guidance. We recommend comparing your system with the published text.
Can Hexa write our aspects register or legal register?
No. ISO/IEC 17021-1 does not allow a certification body to provide management system consultancy to clients it certifies, as this would mean auditing its own work. You can prepare these documents yourselves or with an independent adviser. Our optional pre-assessment can indicate where gaps exist, but it will not provide the content.
How long do we have to transition from ISO 14001:2015?
A transition period of about three years is expected, with an indicative deadline around April 2029. The formal rules are set by IAF and Global Accreditation Cooperation (Global ACI). Your 2015 certificate remains valid during the transition. Hexa can carry out the transition audit at a planned surveillance or recertification visit, which may need some extra audit time. Certificates not transitioned in time will no longer be valid.
Can we certify only one site or part of our business?
Yes, the scope can be limited to particular sites or activities, provided the boundaries are clear and the organisation has authority and control over what is included. A scope should not exclude activities that have significant environmental aspects in a way that would mislead customers. The certificate will state the scope accurately.
How often are surveillance audits carried out?
Surveillance audits take place at least once each calendar year, with the first due within twelve months of the initial certification decision. Each visit samples parts of the system, and certain areas such as compliance evaluation, internal audit, management review and corrective action are checked every time. A full recertification audit is needed before the third anniversary.
